Jaipur: In view of a spate of incidents in which people were robbed outside banks soon after withdrawing money, the Jaipur police have asked bank officials to ensure installation of CCTV cameras and alarm systems and deploy armed security guards at all branches.
Jaipur police commissioner BL Soni on Tuesday organised a meeting with officials and representatives of various banks.
"The focus of the meeting was to sensitise bank officials regarding safety of banks and customers. They were requested to install CCTVs and alarm systems and deploy armed security guards at all branches," Soni said.
Explaining the arrangement, a senior police officer said all banks have been told to inform the police in case their security guards go on leave. "If a guard goes on leave, bank tries to borrow guards from other branches. In case, they are not able to do so, they can inform the police. Police then provides a couple of personnel at the bank or steps up patrolling in the area," said the officer. However, under the arrangement, police are supposed to step in only temporarily and banks soon have to make their own arrangements.
Bank authorities were also requested to provide handguns to guards for better safety. If they don't have arms licence, police will speed up processing of their arms licence applications.
For their part, police had tried several options like increasing patrolling on roads having banks, setting up police pickets near banks and offering escort to people moving with a huge amount of cash. But, traditional policing apart, methods like providing escorts are not feasible over a long period of time.
During the meeting, cases against various banks regarding fake currency, recovery and other issues, were also reviewed. Officials of the Reserve Bank of India, SBI, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, Urban Cooperative Bank, Muthoot Finance were present.
