Number of bank branches increases: Deposit up by 18.25%

The number of bank branches and deposit in them has been on a constant rise over the years in Madhya Pradesh. The number of commercial, cooperative and regional rural banks was 4 thousand 704, which rose to 5 thousand 438 in September 2010. Of these, 3 thousand 157 branches are of commercial banks, 1 thousand 191 of cooperative banks and 1 thousand 90 branches are of regional rural banks. As many as 2 thousand 430 branches are in rural areas, 1 thousand 604 in semi-urban areas and 1 thousand 404 are situated in urban areas.
The progress in banking sector is mainly assessed on the basis of indicators like deposit, advances, investment, advances extended to sectors like primary, agriculture, small scale industries, tertiary sector and weaker section. Primary sector includes agriculture and allied sectors, secondary sector includes industry and tertiary sector includes services.
The rise in number of bank branches has increased the access of people to banking services. Moreover, the money deposited in banks is extended as advances to different sectors which boosts economic growth besides improving infrastructure, health and education facilities.
In March, 2006 a total amount of Rs. 61 thousand 240 crore was deposited in these banks which increased to Rs. 1 lakh 34 thousand 939 crore in September 2010, representing a 18.25 percent increase. Similarly, by March 2006 in year 2006 advances worth Rs. 38 thousand 771 crore were extended compared to which advances to the tune of Rs. 79 thousand 449 crore were extended till September 2010, representing increase of 15.84 percent.
The investment has also increased considerably. In March 2006 it was Rs. 2 thousand 805 crore which increased to Rs. 6 thousand 53 crore in September 2010.
The increase in advances extended to primary sector was 17.01 percent, to small scale industry sector 37.91 percent and to tertiary sector it was 5.99 percent.
By March in year 2006 these banks had extended advances of the order of Rs. 23 thousand 952 crore to primary sector which increased to Rs. 50 thousand 609 crore in September 2010. Similarly, advances to agriculture sector increased from Rs. 13 thousand 950 crore to 30 thousand 60 crore, to small scale industry from Rs. 2 thousand 57 crore to Rs. 10 thousand 121 crore and to tertiary sector from Rs. 7 thousand 945 crore to Rs. 10 thousand 425 crore.
In addition to this, these banks extended advances to the tune of Rs. 4 thousand 2 crore by March in Year 2006 to weaker sections against which advances worth Rs. 11 thousand 936 crore were extended to 936 crore were extended to them by September 2010.
